The Goth Magdalena: A Love Letter to Beauty, Craft, and Del Toro’s Frankenstein
Before anything else… you should know this about me:
I’ve always been a Goth Girl at heart. I've referred to my style as Goth Glam in many an interview.
But this movie wasn't just about the aesthetic—but the spirit of it. The romance, the melancholy, the beauty born from darkness. So when I tell you that Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein resonated with me, I mean it felt like someone made a film directly from the inside of my creative soul.
I watched it twice—first for the story. And then again… exclusively for the visual feast. The sets, the textures, the costuming. In an era where entire worlds can be generated with a keystroke in AI, this film was built by human hands. You can sense the craftsmanship in every scene. It’s the kind of artistry that resonates with me.
And then—there was Elizabeth. Played by Mia Goth, she appeared on screen wearing something that made my designer heart stop: a custom Tiffany-red beaded necklace with a cross. Dramatic. Intentional. An absolute scene stealer!
She wore it against a malachite green dress… and Angels, it was perfection.
A statement accessory doing exactly what it should: transforming the entire moment.
It reminded me immediately of our Magdalena—specifically the Magdalena with the Audrey cross. But this one had its own cinematic intensity. I kept trying to imagine her in something different, but it was impossible. The styling was that precise, that bold.
And of course… I was inspired.
The Birth of the Goth Magdalena
From that red, storm-lit necklace came the idea for a monochromatic Magdalena—leaning fully into color the way the film did. I created two new Goth Magdalena pieces to honor that palette:
A deep, traditional red—a love letter to Elizabeth’s unforgettable necklace.
A sapphire version—an echo of the haunting, oceanic tones of the ship scenes.
They’re dramatic and romantic. The kind of necklace that doesn’t just accessorize an outfit—it defines it.
